Kevin Bullen, a city boy arrived in Broome in 1965 to take up seasonal work in the Broome Meatworks. He had a return ticket to Perth but ended up throwing it away and making Broome his home. He soon grew accustomed to the Broome life style and in his interview describes the town, the various jobs he held and the social scene. He mentions the balls and cabarets and relates some amusing stories about the Broome hotels and the Broome races. He was involved extensively in sport, particularly football and recalls names of teams and players. Over the years Kevin has been a volunteer with numerous community groups included the Broome Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Kevin Bullen had an illustrious career in the Broome Football world, both with his own club of Saints and the Broome Football Association as it was known then, both on and off the ground.
Kevin played his football on the old oval where the Civic Centre stands today.
As well as having outstanding playing history, Kevin held executive positions at both club and association levels.
Kevin’s involvement at both community and sporting level stretched well past football circles alone, and many other organisations would not be where they are now without his involvement, especially with the Broome Fire Brigade where he is a life members.
Football may never had survived without Kevin and his close contact with Fr. Michael McMahon. They were the ones who resurrected Broome Football in 1969 when there were no teams playing from 1955-1968.
Kevin was President of the Broome Football Association from 1969 until 1971 and later in 1978.
Kevin is one of the original football life members in Broome and he has presented the Bullen Medal on most occasions over the past 35 years.
The 73-year-old is the longest-serving current member of the Broome Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (as of 2025) and, along with the late Maurice Gower, he is one of only two life members of the group, of which he served as captain for 13 years.
