Report:

1st Qtr: It was a slight non-event for the first 5 minutes with neither side giving any ground. Both teams were nervous and testing the opposition and themselves. Emu Brendan Cox got the first goal and the big, no huge, Emus crowd of supporters went wild. Both teams were working hard to gain possession and eventually Towns moved the ball into their half, after some untidy play Towns Gino Burgoyne had a sloppy shot but achieved the desired result: an equalizer at the 10 minute mark. Some undisciplined play from the Emus saw a free kick awarded to Towns Bobby Dudley and he never misses a set shot in front of goals! A repeat free kick saw Billy Hutton (Towns) add another. A soft free kick saw Jonathon Camm have a turn adding a 3rd goal to Towns score, all from free kicks in the 50m zone. The gap widened for Emus as they seemed to have thrown away the disciplinary levels they had achieved over the past few weeks. Coach John Thomas was simply not amused!

2nd Qtr: Emus coaching staff must have said the right things at the quarter break as they swung into action with their blistering pace from the centre bounce downs. They added 3 goals in 3 minutes from Dominic Sampi, John Nundi & Brendan Cox. The ball eventually went to Towns and Bobby Dudley was allowed to goal to break the momentum. But it was too easy for Dudley as no Emu player even attempted to stop him! Towns went into attack again but Dudley pointed letting Emus off the hook. From the kick in that man Dudley sent a beautiful bomb back for a needed goal for his team. Tension was mounting and Emus needed to lift. They had played two hard games leading to this final and their natural running game looked like it was suffering! Some of the speedsters were being run down and caught by the fit Towns team. Dominic Sampi had moments of brilliance but seemed unable to lift his team-mates with him! Eventually Emus got two goals near the siren and after a better quarter they were only 3 points down.

3rd Qtr: The vital 3rd quarter commence with Town having a slight advantage from the sea breeze. It was fast and furious as was to be expected and Towns Gino Burgoyne got the important first goal. They got another from a set shot in front through the dependable Bobby Dudley and it was looking all Townies. Emus Wayne Edgar got one back from a free kick plus a 50m penalty as tempers frayed but Towns replied through Leith Barnes & Gino Burgoyne to stretch their lead. Towns were moving the ball between their players very effectively and the game-plan to hold up Emus players when they gained possession was working. Emus were looking a little flat for most of the quarter. They stopped manning up and the writing was on the wall.

4th Qtr: Emus were down but not out: several times this season they had come back and the big crowd were willing the sentimental favourites to stage another comeback! But Bobby Dudley and his Towns mates were not having a bar of it! Dudley goaled several times with the best being his 3rd of the quarter: with his back to the goals he swung his boot and miraculously sank a heartbreaking goal through the unsighted goal posts. He sank the knife into Emus back with another goal seconds later and we all knew the inevitable was coming…

Towns went down as the victors in 2002 and repeated the feat in 2003. They played well all season and thoroughly deserved this win. Emus need to hold their heads high: wooden spooners for 2002 they have dragged themselves up to contend this season’s vital prize. They will be a force over the coming seasons.

THE FATHER McMAHON MEDAL FOR BEST PLAYER OF THE GRAND FINAL WAS AWARDED TO ADAM ASHDOWN FROM TOWNS FOOTBALL CLUB

Report:

1st Qtr: It was a slight non-event for the first 5 minutes with neither side giving any ground. Emus Brendan Cox got the first goal through a turnover in the centre and some face pacey movement of the ball. Cable Beach youngsters such as Lindsay Bin Bakar looked good early on and had plenty of touches but overall Emus had more control of the ball. Beach Simon Docherty passed to Tristan Bedford who went on to the forward area but Beach could not convert. Plenty of free kicks were being awarded as the pressure from both sides saw players making mistakes. Emus gained the ball and streamed down the high school wing passing to Arnold Bamba who sidestepped the opposition and scored a great goal. Emus leg speed was the difference between these two teams as most people expected and the question was how long would they be able to keep it up? Emus started to contest the ball in the air and Cable Beach were uncharacteristically starting to look flustered and not hold several easy marks.

2nd Qtr: Emus peppered the goals and again held control of the ball during the early stages of the quarter. Again they were contesting every mark and possession which is something they have not consistently achieved throughout the season. Emus confidence grew at about the same rate that Cable Beach were loosing theirs! Emus still made some of the silly disposals and allowed the ball to be too easily turned over to the opposition. Beach Mick Fong grabbed the ball and ran into an open goal but was ferociously tackled by an Emus player who saved a certain goal. Emus teamwork was looking better than at any point this year and their defense saved a couple of other ‘certain goals’. Terrance Jack (Emus) got a couple of goals and the large and vocal Emus support group lifted. With 5 minutes to go it was still Emus but Tyrone Garstone got one back for Cable Beach by showing his class as a full forward and gently nudging his opponent out and under the ball.

3rd Qtr: Cable Beach looked to be lacking in the communication area with several certain marks being spoilt by team mates. Vernon Dann (Cable Beach) got the first goal for his side but they were allowing Emus to dominate in the air which was very unusual. Emus confidence was increasing minute by minute and in the quarter that Beach needed to make a big move, it was looking to be too hard for them. Beach just simply could not break free of Emus tackling and go get it I attitude which was relentless. The quarter was fairly even.

4th Qtr: When Cable Beach got the first two goals of the qtr in the first few minute Emus supporters went strangely quiet. It went to a deathly hush when Vernon Dann (Cable Beach) took a great and important mark and converted for the 3rd…It was all Beach in a mini turnaround and they saw a glimmer of hope only being 2.2 down with 12 minutes to go. Emus regrouped and Michael Hunter and Terrance Jack goaled to get the breathing space back again. The big crowd sighed and were happy in the knowledge that the fairy tale finish to the season would continue for at least another week.

CABLE BEACH - Goal Scorers: Ben Rahman Ashley Dann, Nathan Grant (1)

Best Players: Nathan Grant, Doug Corpus, Ginger Heslington

Report:  Towns Gavin Mitchell got first blood in this match but Cable Beach Ashley Dann retaliated immediately with a superb long bomb using the sea breeze to gently bring the ball back for a goal. The crowd settled down for the clash of the two top teams from WKFA 2003 with anticipation. Play for this qtr was fairly even but patchy overall. Both teams were testing each other out. The 2nd qtr saw Towns break away and turn the Cable Beach attack over and convert for an early goal. Beach were trying hard but Towns ferocious tackling saw Beach faltering in their endevours to control the ball. Towns Bobby Dudley got another goal and when his team then took the centre bounce-down to another quick goal from Leith Barnes the crowd went flat.

After the half time break Cable Beach knew they had to attack the 4 goal deposit and do it fast! However Towns defense did not falter through the likes of Christian Lee. A couple of quick goals from Towns Joe Sara & Billy Hutton saw the sting well and truly gone from this game. Cable Beach looked very tired and could not man up on some of the opposition making it too easy for Towns. The final qtr was a bit of a dud with Beach unable to penetrate into a weakening forward line. Towns just kept pushing forward and working to the inevitable end.

Cable Beach looked much improved two weeks ago but this performance will leave them unsure of their chances next week.

BULLS - Goal Scorers:  Brian Lester, Steven Thompson, Jeramy Tighe, Nick Ritchie, Matt Varney (1)

Best Players:  Brian Lester, Scotty Elson, Jamie Findlay, Steven Thompson, Clint Hutchinson

Report:  The crowd had been building all afternoon for this one. Rumour had it that Bidyadanga was deserted as this important game got under way. The first goal went to Bulls Steve Thompson in what was 5 minutes of fast and furious play. It was pretty tense and the question was would Emus be able to overcome the height of Bulls players such as Dan Taylor & Mark Chadwick down the centre corridor. Bulls started to crowd play frustrating Emus natural running game and went to the break ahead by 8 points. Emus awoke from the slumber and outplayed the opposition. Bulls were a little unlucky and got several points in what was fairly even play.

Emus had snuck ahead and the vital 3rd qtr would see both teams physically committed and showing very courageous play at times. Both teams goaled early and then continued on going goal for goal. As was to be expected Emus were winning on the ground and Bulls the battle in the air. The huge crowd was very vocal and the air charged with the knowledge that only one team would move on in the finals race. Bulls started to make a late charge getting a couple of goals and suddenly only 4 points separated them. The final term was torrid with Emus crowd lifting as they tried to goal but only scored 2 points. But the lead had stretched to 1 goal and then with another Emus point Bulls needed two goals to win. Tempers were on the line with 8 minutes to go as play alternated constantly. Emus Michael Hunter goaled and it was going to be tough for Bulls. They are a tough team and Brian Lester gave them hope with a goal. All eyes were on the clock and both sides threw everything in to the final minutes. In the end Emus got home by 8 points and the crowd went wild.

WKFA AWARDS NIGHT SEES DAVO COX SCOOP AWARDS

Saturday night saw the awards ceremony for the WKFA take place before what was a disappointing crowd. Despite the numbers a fantastic night was enjoyed by those present. The awards were the highlights of an enjoyable evening that brought clubs together to celebrate the season. The ladies from Cable Beach provided a feast of delectable Broome food for all the guests.

Brilliant Peninsular Bombers teenager Davo Cox capped an outstanding season of senior football when he collected three major awards at the West Kimberley Football Association vote counting and awards night held at the Gimme Gimme Bar on Saturday evening. The teenager won the prestigious Brian Kane Medal for the outstanding young player of the year, the ABC Footballer of the Year, judged by football supporters, as well as edging out Towns star Joe Sara to poll the top tally in the leagues premier award for Fairest & Best, the Kevin Bullen Medal. Cox is an outstanding talent and several keen followers of local football believe the lad has the potential to play at AFL level if he decides to pursue the challenge.

Quinlan Jaffrey was awarded the prized Garnduwa Rising Star Award for the best first year player as a recognition of his brilliant first season of senior football. The Cable Beach youngster was the pick of the best first year players nominated by their clubs.

The leading Goalkicker of the Year was Bobby Dudley from Towns who won narrowly from Brock Brown (Bulls) and Stephen Cox from the Bombers. Dudley collected 32 goals for the Home & Away season while the other two players tied on 20 goal each.

SEASON: 2003

EMUS COME THROUGH

The 2003 Reconciliation Cup was played in Broome this weekend with West Kimberley teams all vying for the prestigious title in this lightning carnival.

The format and hot conditions throughout the days saw a large number of players discover that they were not as fit as they perhaps thought… Heat stress and cramping saw many players sidelined.

Mowanjum and Derby are playing in the WKFA this season and both teams provided a good deal of potential for the spectators. As was expected, lack of communication and unfamiliarity with new team-mates was an issue for both teams. They will improve as the season unfolds.

The upset of the carnival occurred when the two bottom teams from last years ‘home & away’ season worked their way into the final! On Sunday afternoon they met to fight it out.

Emus were pumped and goaled early in a feisty start. Supporters wee treated to the best performance of the weekend and showed their appreciation. Some great shepherding in the goal square saw Bulls capture the first goal through Scott Thompson. Terrance Jack goaled for Emus to regain the lead and t was still a tense affair with committed tackling and the Emus running game paying off. In the latter stage of the first half of footy Emus struck a purple patch and were humiliating the Bulls usual stoic game. At the break Emus were 5.2 Bull 1.0

Bulls coaching staff were not overly concerned and urged players to communicate and improve teamwork in the forward area. They knew they were making simple mistakes and were urged to lift.

Emus coaches implores their charges not to go soft or let Bulls off the hook. The players were asked to put their bodies on the line and play hard at the ball.

The final half of the game bogged down which was ominous for Bulls…they needed a couple of quick goals but these never came. Emus kept their game plan and by keeping their forward section open managed a couple more goals. Their confidence grew and they played like a team possessed.

The crowd saw a great game of footy and both teams should have held heads high with a great start to the season. Emus finally finished 7.3 to 1.1 but it was closer and better than that score would indicate…

The Donnely McKenzie Medal for Fairest & Best of the Reconciliation Cup went to Emu’s player Donald SAMPI. It was presented at the completion of the game to him by Donnely.

Football Home & Away season commences the week after Easter

See you all there!
