Volunteering in Japan with the M.C.s

(Tokyo 25th July - 15th August)

The Brothers support those who have an addiction to alcohol in one of the poorer areas of Tokyo. I arrive on 25th July and meet members of the MC community who take me out on the streets of where they live and soon enough we see many people affected by alcohol addiction sleeping on the footpath together with their vomit. The brothers house is comfortable but spartan. The alcoholics occupy the lower floor of the two storey building where the MC's live upstairs. The brothers are glad to see me and I feel right at home immediately. This is where I will help where I can for the next three weeks.

July 26th - Meet Fr.Jim who was previously a fireman and joined to become a priest at the age of 40. He is so full of life and mentally very active. He helps the Vietnamese refugees. Immediately, I feel rapport with him. We eagerly converse for a long time. He gives me a picture of the 'laughing Jesus' which he requested from an artist friend of his to produce. This hits a note with me immediately. Of course Jesus would have laughed. All was not pain and sorrow. Fr. Jim gives this print to as many people as possible.
