SOVIET UNION WAR IN AFGHANISTAN (24 Dec 1979 – 15 Feb 1989)

The conflict led to the deaths of between 562,000 and 2,000,000 Afghans, while millions more fled from the country as refugees; most externally displaced Afghans sought refuge in Pakistan and in Iran.

Soviet Union:

  • 9,500 killed in combat.
  • 4,000 died from wounds.
  • 1,000 died from disease and accidents.

USA WAR IN AFGHANISTAN (1999 – 2021)

There were 2,456 United States military deaths in the War in Afghanistan. 1,932 of these deaths were the result of hostile action. 20,752 American servicemembers were also wounded in action during the war. In addition, 18 Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives also died in Afghanistan.
