1976
In 1976 I taught Science and Maths to the Form 1 (Year 7's) at Whitefriars College Donvale not far from my home in Ringwood. (That's my blue Holden HD station wagon parked in front of the Admin entrance) |
An enjoyable year especially experienting with genetics by breeding all different colours of mice starting with black and white ones. We used the J.S.S.P. (Junior Secondary Science Programme) individual learning kits. With the learning being student centred, it was a lot of work setting up each afternoon after school, ready for the next day, but it worked very well. |
A wonderful staff. Fr. Bernie McPhee Principal. My former classmate Eddie De Jong in the back row with the beard and blonde hair. BK centre second row. |
The teachers and students from Whitefriars College raised $3,660 to assist the work of the Missionaries of Charity among the poor when I was there in 1977/78. |
Br. Andrew MC leader in Calcutta wrote to me on 29th August 1976 "Possibilities of teaching the 'Come and Sees' English as well as serving the poor. Our work is simple and basic, not much institutionalizing or organization." Such joy I felt and shared the news with my good friend Geoff Geaney. I then went off immediately to pack up my meagre belongings and focused my mind on the coming road ahead. 20th Nov 1976 - Br. Andrew writes again and warns me that "the living conditions will be tough in terms of privacy and food. Thanks for your generous offer - we may have something going for you with our communities in the Far East after Calcutta." Brother Andrew MC |
