1999

BULLS WIN THEIR 3 RD STRAIGHT PREMIERSHIP IN A "BOILOVER"

1999 : 50 years since the Towns Club was formed. Over the years they have won 21 premierships including 5 in a row from 1974 - 1978. Considering there was no football played in Broome from 1963 through to 1968, Towns have a winning ratio of 1 Premiership every two years. Towns first played in a white singlet and white shorts in 1949. According to Don Gibbs (Nov. 1998), these colours were not popular with the wives who often had the task of cleaning the pindan stains.

1999 : 50 years since the Bulls (Meatworks) Club was formed. They have won 9 premierships including the last 2 in 1997 and 1998. Bulls first played in a black singlet and black shorts in 1949.

In their first competition match, Towns 7.25 defeated Meatworks (Bulls) 3.6

Meatworks (Bulls) won their first premiership the following year 1950 defeating Towns 30.19 to 8.7. Len Molan kicked an all time record of 16 goals in that game. Towns won the next 3 Premierships in a row 1951, 1952 and 1953.

The Premiership from 1949 - 1962 was fought out for the Max Abbott Cup (1949-1954) and the Solomon Shield (1955 - 1962). Both of these awards were kept in the display cabinets at the Continental Hotel (Mercure). With a change of manager in the 60's the trophies had to be removed. Don Gibbs (skipper of Towns for 8 seasons) rode down on his bike and picked them up. These trophies have been in his safe keeping for the last 35 years. Now that the Association can once more display these awards in the office of Garnduwa, Don has willing decided to personally present the trophies back to the Association during the 1999 season.

Round 3 results:

There were surprise results in the Rio Tinto Premiership Cup football last weekend. In the first game played on Saturday, Bidyadanga buoyed by their win the previous week, continued to show exceptional form and fought tenaciously against an inaccurate Cable Beach to produce the first draw of the season. Bidyadanga kicked 9.6.60 to Cable Beach 8.12.60. In the second game, the Bombers proved too strong running out convincing winners 13.16.94 over Saints 5.2.32. On Sunday, Towns caused a 'boilover" by defeating the defending champions, the Bulls, in a tough encounter. In the first quarter there were two players stretchered off the field and 3 players sent to the 'sin bin'. Towns left the opposition wondering as they piled on 9.15.69 to defeat Bulls 8.7.55. Leon Jacky and Willian Scott controlled the game as Jamie Watkins kicked four goals for Towns. Mark Bushell, Matt Varney and Jamie Finley tried determinedly for Bulls as Chad Mc Elroy kicked three goals in a great display.
